JCoSS Community School
JCoSS Community Secondary School is a £30 million state-or-the-art new school build in London is benefiting from the superior design solutions provided by fenestration experts Sapa Building Systems.
Architect: RHWL Architects
Fabricator: Fleetwood Windows Ltd
Main Contractor: Ardmore Construction
The new building, designed by RHWL Architects, will open in phases, having just celebrated its first intake of Year 7 pupils this September. By the time it is at full capacity, in 2015, it will offer 1,310 places.
Key to the architect’s design was the grouping of education facilities and resources around a central circulation and assembly ‘heart’, to create spaces where students could not only work or study but also relax and meet. The teaching wings were designed to accommodate teaching faculties, but they have integrated adaptability to ensure that the school can evolve into the future. The wings radiate towards the playing fields to capture views and good daylight, while thematic courtyards and the central plaza serve as both break-time and outdoor learning spaces, and offer a MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) and all-weather hard courts.
The building was designed to maximise natural daylight and natural ventilation in teaching spaces. Classrooms have windcatcher ventilation turrets, working in combination with night time ventilation through fanlights and in conjunction with the deliberately heavy weight construction of the fabric. All circulation areas are naturally ventilated.
In the summertime, classroom windows are openable for overheating ventilation. In the SRU (Special Resources Unit), some classrooms are mechanically ventilated to maintain a highly controlled environment for teaching of autistic spectrum pupils.
Various measures were taken in the fabric to minimise the solar heat gains and winter heat losses and the fabric was insulated to a high standard. High performance glazing was used in south, east and west facing facades while solar shading was used on a number of facades.
The striking 14,490m² state-of-the-art building is benefiting from Sapa’s fully enhanced windows, doors, curtain walling and Dualframe 75mm window system in a contract worth around £1.3m to the fabricator and installer, Fleetwood Windows Ltd. Enfield based Ardmore Construction were main contractors for the construction of the new school buildings.
The advanced polyamide thermal break technology allows the Dualframe 75mm range to deliver exceptional u-Values and WER ratings using double glazed units while a stunning u-Value of 1.0Wm²K is achievable by moving to triple glazed units.
Extensive weather testing has also underlined highest class performance for water tightness, air permeability and wind resistance, achieving Class 9A (600Pa), Class 4 (600Pa) and Class E (2400Pa) respectively. In addition, all weather (BS6375-1), mechanical (BS6375-2) and security (BS7950) testing has been carried out at BSI.
