The architect's description
In 2010, FOJAB architects were chosen, after parallel assignments, to design and project the university's synchrotron light system MAX IV. Our ambition has been for the high-tech process to be reflected in the plant's exterior and interior design. For the spatial organization, the focus is on the researchers' functional requirements for the plant as well as the characteristics of the site and the surroundings. All different building parts have specific design requirements with regard to function, scope and service life. Some are tailor made, while others have general design to accommodate not yet fully defined needs. The underground parts are built in heavy dimensions of reinforced concrete and constitute a sluggish mass which limits the propagation of ambient vibrations, provides temperature stability and protection against unwanted radiation leaking to the surroundings.

The office building is built with steel frame with facade of recessed white lacquered aluminum cabinets and window sills in two levels per floor. The window strip has an external horizontal sunshade of white lacquered aluminum sheet. The office building dominates the laboratories by bridging the large electron storage ring and putting one leg on the inside of the ring. The design idea is that the office building should express high-tech operations and that it should color-scale the facades of the laboratory buildings in white concrete, while differing in size and material expression.

The large experimental hall roof ceiling with its brushed aluminum surface, the office building's white sheet metal slats with horizontal sun protection for windows and the other concrete white facades of the other buildings together with the rolling landscape make the MAX IV laboratory a characteristic landmark at Lund's northern entrance. The entire plant has been environmentally certified in accordance with Environmental Building Gold, Green Building and the office building according to BREEAM SE Outstanding.
