Circulation and recycling
About 8% of the Earth’s crust consists of aluminium in the form of different minerals. The availability of the raw material can be practically regarded as unlimited.
Bauxite is the most important input material in the production of aluminium. Today, the mineable deposits of this raw material are estimated to 200-400 years of production at the current rate. And this does not take into account the recycled metal. Bauxite contains alumina (aluminium oxide) which is extracted and then converted to aluminium (the primary metal) by melting electrolysis.
In principle, aluminium can be recycled and used in new products in an endless cycle – without quality deterioration. Apart from this, only a few per cent of the metal are lost in the remelting process.
The aluminium that leaves the cycle goes back to the nature in the form of aluminium oxide – a substance that occurs naturally in our environment. The energy consumption in the recycling process is much lower – only 5% of the energy needed for the production of the primary metal.
Today, recycled aluminium (the secondary metal) corresponds to about 25% of the world’s consumption.
Remelting the metal – in-house
In order to be able to close the cycle, we have invested in an own remelting plant in Sjunnen outside Vetlanda. Here we melt down sorted scrap metal coming from our own plants, our subsuppliers and our customers and produce new ingots – cylindrical metal blocks that are ready to be used for the extrusion of profiles.
